Being a saint in times of war is a profound challenge. Yet we see that true heroes of the Christian faith are born, above all, from love for God and neighbor, as well as from active love for their motherland. This was stated by the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, in his traditional video address during the 225th week of the great sacrilegious war that the Russian aggressor continues to wage against peaceful Ukrainian soil.

The Primate noted that the past week had been exceptionally difficult and violent. According to official reports, combat operations have escalated significantly along the entire front line.

“The very fact that we are alive, that Ukraine has endured, is yet another miracle of God. Therefore, we sincerely thank the Lord God and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the gift of living through another week under God’s protection,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

Throughout the week, peaceful cities and villages across Ukraine came under daily attack from various types of Russian weaponry. At the same time, according to the Head of the Church, Ukraine experienced much of God’s light during these difficult days.

A special public event was held in Lviv, where the local community honored the many years of ministry, educational work, and spiritual service of the Salesian Fathers. Among those recognized was Father Mykhailo Chaban, a pioneer in the development of amputee football in Ukraine, who received a special award.

“Veterans who have passed through the crucible of war and lost limbs have not only returned to active life. Through their example, courage, and determination to succeed even on the sports field, they inspire millions of Ukrainians today. A particularly moving member of this team is a young boy named Mykhailo, who has also undergone an amputation. Despite his young age, he fulfills a special mission among these courageous veterans—helping restore their confidence, strengthen their spirit, and heal their inner wounds,” said the spiritual leader.

In accordance with the liturgical calendar of the Eastern Church, this Sunday marks the Feast of All Saints.

“Being a saint in the midst of war is a profound challenge. Yet we see that true heroes of the Christian faith are born first and foremost from love for God and neighbor, and from active love for their motherland. To be a saint in Ukraine today means being ready to give even one’s life for the sake of God and for the salvation of one’s neighbor,” the Primate added.
