On Monday, January 6, Fr. Ihor Makar, a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, director of Caritas Kherson, and chaplain of the Knights of Columbus, was injured in a drone attack in Zelenivka near Kherson, suffering shrapnel wounds.

According to Fr. Ihor, he and seminarians from the Drohobych Theological Seminary were traveling to the village of Inzhenerne to attend a festive Liturgy and the blessing of water at the parish of St. Michael the Archangel. On their way to the church, they spotted a Russian drone.

“When we drove out and were following a parishioner, Deacon Yaroslav, I noticed a drone in the sky. The road was very slippery, and we could neither stop nor turn around… Then I realized that this drone was probably targeting us,” the priest recounted.

The explosion shattered the car windows, punctured the doors, and damaged the wheels. Fortunately, the seminarians were unharmed, but Fr. Ihor sustained a shrapnel wound to his leg.

His condition is currently stable, but he will require surgery to remove the shrapnel.
