On the second Sunday of Lent in Bukovyna’s missionary territory, children and parents of the Sunday school at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary learned about environmental education, and the Church’s teachings on responsibility for creation, energy efficiency, and conservation.

“Millionaires’ Suitcase” Presented to Children in Bukovyna

This was reported by the Information Service of the UGCC Bureau for Ecology.

Father Volodymyr Dyakiv, a referent of the UGCC Bureau of Ecology, introduced the Energy Efficiency Suitcase, also affectionately referred to as the Millionaire Suitcase by the priest. He coined this term for the children because it contains devices designed to conserve natural resources, protect the environment, and save money.”

The priest discussed various ways of energy saving and practical use of the contents of the eco-bag, ranging from a simple thermometer, aerator, motion sensor, current cutter, rechargeable batteries, and eco-bags made of natural materials.

The priest noted that “God created the world a long time ago, but nowadays we are the creators of everything around us, and in communion with our Creator, we truly become co-creators.” The eco-referent emphasized the harmfulness of burning dry grass for the environment, a practice that destroys the life created by God. Composting is presented as a worthy alternative. Echoing the words of St. Augustine, who said, ‘God created us without us, but he did not will to save us without us,’ the priest incorporated the principles of environmental protection and responsible management of natural resources into the broader context of salvation history, to which the Creator and Savior calls every person.

Attendees studied energy-efficient appliances and household items with interest, and purchased spiritual and environmental literature that teaches how to save and conserve energy.

Parents and children gained valuable insights and knowledge. Recognizing humanity’s co-responsibility for God’s creation, environmental education, skills in caring for the environment, and the rational use of scientific advancements are crucial for preserving the Earth, a gift bestowed upon us by God.
