105 Children Receive First Confession and Solemn Holy Communion at St. Joseph Ukrainian Parish in Chicago
This weekend, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish of St. Joseph the Betrothed in Chicago hosted a big celebration for the entire parish family — 1 st Holy Confession and 1 st Solemn Holy Communion for children.
Throughout the year, the children participated in Sunday catechesis, where they studied prayers, the foundations of the Christian faith, and prepared to receive the Holy Sacraments. Their spiritual journey was guided by the pastor of the parish, Fr. Mykola Buryadnyk, along with Fr. Andriy Delisandro and Fr. Bohdan Nalysnyk. The parish sisterhood and office staff also contributed to the organization of the celebration.
As noted by the parish, First Holy Communion is not merely a beautiful tradition or a family celebration. It is a memory that remains in a child’s heart for a lifetime: “Every such encounter with the Church can become a seed of faith that will one day bear good fruit. Our greatest hope today is that these children will return to the church not only on feast days but throughout their lives. We hope that amidst the noise of the world, they will remember that they are always welcome in the House of God.”
This “Day of Encounter with Christ” was a triumph of faith and a personal response to the gift of God, marking the children’s first conscious reception of the Eucharist and their initiation into a deeper life within the Church of Christ.
