A Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Sophia Cathedral in Rome, Italy, with Bishop Ivan Kulyk, Eparch of Kamyanets-Podilskyi and Secretary of the St. Sophia Religious Association, leading the service. The service was dedicated to the memory of the founders and benefactors of the cathedral, deceased clergy, parishioners, and students. Particular focus was given to honoring the memory of Archbishop Ivan Buchko on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his departure.

The liturgy was attended by members of the St. Sophia Association, the clergy of the cathedral, parishioners, pilgrims from around the world, and students united in prayer for the deceased, whose work and sacrifices laid the foundations for the development of the cathedral, the Ukrainian community in Rome, and the Ukrainian Church.

The faithful honored the memory of the archpastor of the wanderers, Archbishop Ivan Buchko, with words of respect and gratitude for the significant spiritual heritage in the life of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community.

It is worth adding that the book “Archpastor of the Wanderers, Archbishop Ivan Buchko” mentions his burial.

“The funeral services were led by His Beatitude Supreme Archbishop Joseph, who placed the mortal remains of Archbishop Ivan in a ‘new tomb’ under the church of St. Sophia. By this decision, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church wanted to honor the late Bishop Ivan in a special way, despite the humble wish recorded in the ‘Last Will’ of Archbishop Ivan Buchko on February 18, 1973,” the book says.
