From September 21 to 23, an international interreligious conference, “Searching for ways of reconciliation in times of war,” was held in Tokyo (Japan), organized by the international organization “Religions for Peace.” With the blessing of His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the head of the Commission for Interfaith and Interreligious Relations, Fr. Ihor Shaban participated in it.

In his speech, the priest emphasized that the unjust war started by Russia against peaceful Ukraine has caused thousands of deaths and continues to destroy houses, schools, hospitals, and churches.

The world religious community is fully aware of the extent to which Russian aggression in Ukraine continues to cause death and numerous destructions. Therefore, a separately prepared discussion about the role, understanding, and steps towards a possible reconciliation was critical. Addressing the conference participants, Fr. Ihor emphasized the importance of this Christian element for the future. Still, he noted that while there is Russian aggression and genocide against the Ukrainian people, it is too early to talk about it. Only after the Russians stop killing Ukrainians and the aggressor is convicted will it be possible to begin this complicated wound healing process.
