On Sunday, 22 March, the Eparchial Museum “Ukrainian Museum of Australia” in Melbourne officially opened a new exhibition titled “Ukrainian Wooden Wonders”.

The Eparchial Museum in Melbourne invites visitors to a new exhibition

The exhibition presents the traditions of Ukrainian woodcarving, introducing visitors to the richness of ornamentation, symbolism, and craftsmanship. It offers an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of one of the important forms of Ukrainian folk art.

As the museum director, Ms Maru Jarockyj, noted, “All the exhibits here, apart from the carpets, began their life as Ukrainian wood. Imagine, ladies and gentlemen, this wood—and see what wonders Ukrainian hands and Ukrainian talents have created, what beautiful things. Ukrainians have always loved beauty, and whatever they touch becomes vibrant and beautiful.” She also briefly spoke about the exhibits on display and their creators.

His Eminence Mykola Cardinal Bychok, Eparch of Melbourne, had the honour of officially opening the exhibition. Addressing those present, he said: “Today, for the second Sunday in a row, we are turning our attention to our culture. Last weekend, we had the Uki Fest in Sydney, where we had the opportunity to share the richness of Ukrainian cultural heritage. And today, we gather once again to discover another of its dimensions—the art of woodcarving. I sincerely thank all those who contributed to organising this exhibition, and I encourage you to share what you have seen and to invite your family and friends.”

His Eminence expressed his gratitude to the museum director and all the volunteers for their dedicated service and for their efforts in preserving and promoting Ukrainian culture, art, and the history of Ukrainians in Australia. He also invited everyone to join in a prayer of thanksgiving for those museum volunteers who have passed away.
