Kyiv Theological Seminary Sends 12 Boxes of Ukrainian Literature to Cherkasy

This was reported by the Kyiv Seminary media center.

On Friday, Father Ihor Kotenko, a graduate of the Kyiv Theological Seminary, rector of the Church of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Cherkasy, and director of Caritas-Cherkasy, visited the seminary. He coordinates the campaign “Donate a Ukrainian Book to Cherkasy”, initiated by His Beatitude Sviatoslav. He will personally deliver the books to libraries in Cherkasy.

Recalling his meetings that took place during his three-day pastoral visit to Cherkasy, His Beatitude Sviatoslav noted that he asked the same question in every place: “How can we serve you?”

“During a meeting with Cherkasy library staff, people told me that they read books here. The residents of Cherkasy do go to libraries!” emphasized the Head of the UGCC. “But I also received a special request—a request for Ukrainian books.” The spiritual leader explained that this request is related to the processes of decommunization and the removal of Russian-language imperial literature from library collections. And now, according to him, there is a growing need for the Ukrainian word in the region.

“Today, Cherkasy is once again becoming a place where people seek the Ukrainian word, Ukrainian books,” the Patriarch noted. “Therefore, we solemnly announce to the whole world the start of the campaign ‘Donate a Ukrainian Book to Cherkasy.’”

The Primate emphasized that the quest for the Ukrainian word is not only a cultural but also a deeply spiritual process. “Today, the people of Cherkasy, in their search for the Ukrainian word, are finding light, spiritual, traditional, and Christian values on which to build the future of Ukraine.”

His Beatitude Sviatoslav appealed to libraries in various cities of Ukraine, to public reading rooms of the Ukrainian diaspora abroad, as well as to private collectors: “Donate your books to Cherkasy!” “Today, books,” he added, “can become a source of resilience for our people—a space where people draw new ideas, meanings, and senses from our national culture, from the immortal Ukrainian word, whose bearer was the great Taras, who rests nearby in Kaniv.”

“Our Church, as the bearer of the tradition of Kyiv Christianity’s enlightenment, today in a special way can, wants to, and must serve the people of Cherkasy through the word of Ukrainian culture and books,” emphasized the Patriarch.

The Kyiv Three Saints Seminary joined the initiative in a practical way by donating literature from its own book collections. In doing so, it shared the hope of His Beatitude Sviatoslav that the call would be heard in Ukraine and beyond and that the Church would fulfill its special mission.

The campaign is coordinated by Father Ihor Kotenko, rector of the Church of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Cherkasy and director of Caritas-Cherkasy.
