In Belgium, unknown individuals stole a memorial plaque from a cross commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine
The administrator of the Parish of the Protection of the Holy Mother of God of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Liège (Belgium), Father Mykhailo Shevtsov, reported that an act of vandalism occurred at the Shrine of the Holy Mother of God in Banne. Unknown individuals tore down and stole a memorial plaque from a cross erected in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine.
The incident was reported on the website of the Eparchy of St. Volodymyr the Great in Paris.
The cross symbolized the Christian heritage of the Ukrainian people and served as a sign of Ukraine’s spiritual presence at one of Europe’s well-known pilgrimage sites. The memorial plaque informed pilgrims about the historical significance of this event for Ukraine and its people.
The disappearance of the plaque has caused deep concern among the faithful and underscored the importance of protecting and preserving religious and national monuments. The incident has already been reported to the relevant authorities. The Ukrainian community hopes that the circumstances will be clarified as soon as possible and that the memorial plaque will be restored.
