A Conference of Chief Military Chaplains of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Held in Lviv

On June 9, a conference of the chief military chaplains of the eparchies and exarchates of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was held at the Garrison Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Lviv. The event was organized by the Department of Military Chaplaincy of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC to coordinate pastoral care for military personnel, veterans, and their families.

The conference was chaired by Bishop Bohdan Manyshyn, head of the Department of Military Chaplaincy. The event was initiated by Fr. Taras Mykhalchuk, head of the Center for Military Chaplaincy of the Lviv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and rector of the Garrison Church of Saints Peter and Paul. He is also responsible for coordinating volunteer chaplains within the Department of Military Chaplaincy. Syncelluses for military chaplaincy from various eparchies and exarchates also participated in the conference.

The main topic of the meeting was identifying future directions for the development of military pastoral care and strengthening cooperation among those involved in chaplaincy ministry throughout the eparchies and exarchates of the UGCC.


Participants discussed the role of volunteer chaplains who minister to military personnel, veterans, and the families of fallen, missing, and captured defenders. They also addressed cooperation between volunteer and full-time military chaplains, as well as the coordination of ministry in the field.

During the conference, Fr. Taras Mykhalchuk presented the experience of organizing and developing military pastoral care in the Lviv Archeparchy of the UGCC.

Participants paid special attention to the preparation of regulatory and canonical documents needed to streamline military pastoral ministry in response to contemporary challenges.
