UGCC Bishops and U. S. Bishops’ Delegates Discuss Support for Ukrainian Refugees

On March 18, a meeting took placein Warsaw, Poland, between bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s Przemyśl-Warsaw Metropolia and representatives of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. The meeting focused on pastoral challenges and support for Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

The meeting took place at the General Secretariat of the Polish Bishops’ Conference. Among those in attendance were Bishop Gerald L. Vincke, chairman of the Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, and Jennifer Healy, national director of the respective office of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Poland was represented by Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemyśl and Warsaw Eugeniusz Popowicz, Bishop of Wrocław and Koszalin Volodymyr Yushchak, Bishop Arkadiusz Trochanowski of Olsztyn-Gdańsk, and Auxiliary Bishop Mariusz Dmyterko of the Wrocław-Koszalin Eparchy.

During the meeting, an overview of the current situation of the UGCC in Poland was presented. The participants discussed pastoral issues, particularly the care of Ukrainians who were forced to leave Ukraine due to the war. It was noted that new pastoral centers have recently been established in Poland, which creates new opportunities and poses additional challenges for the Church at the same time.

Special attention was given to the issue of continued assistance to refugees, particularly the establishment of psychological support centers. The bishops of the UGCC expressed their gratitude to the U. S. episcopate for its long-standing support in the implementation of various pastoral projects.
