“A price Ukrainians pay for their freedom is too high. I always reiterate in America that Ukrainians are fighting for the same freedom we have, for the opportunity to determine their own future. That is why the democratic world must unite and bear the burden of war with Ukrainians. After all, in many ways, we are all Ukrainians today because we strive for self-determination and freedom so that no one from outside dictates to us who we are and how we should act,” said Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, American Cardinal Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, who visited Lviv and the Ukrainian Catholic University on June 28, Constitution Day.

“The world must unite and bear the burden of war together with Ukrainians” — Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich visits Lviv and UCU

According to the archbishop, his visit to Ukraine aims to express support and show solidarity with the Ukrainian people: “Each of us is suffering from the Russian invasion. The whole world is under threat because there is a war going on. People worldwide must realize that they must support the Ukrainian people. I hope that this visit will allow me to communicate this message to the citizens of the United States once I return to the United States.”

Cardinal Blase Cupich is a member of Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, USCCB Committee on Migration and Refugee Services, and USCCB Subcommittee for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.

With the UCU delegation, Cardinal Cupich also visited the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and the Field of Honorary Burials, where today the funeral of the Hero who died at the front for Ukraine took place.

“On the Constitution Day of Ukraine, you, Ukrainians, once again assert to the entire free world what the Constitution means, what rights and freedoms it guarantees. Today, we honored the soldiers who paid the highest price to ensure that the Constitution and the people it serves continue to exist. It is a moment to feel deep mourning and gratitude for their sacrifice. Humanity is crying today. Ukrainians are paying too high a price for freedom. That is why the world must unite and bear this burden with you,” Cardinal Cupich said.
