Head of the UGCC on the 150th Week of War: Our Savior is Born Where Ukraine is Suffering Most
For the third time, we are celebrating Christmas amidst these brutal circumstances—amidst blood, pain, destruction, and intense enemy attacks on land, sea, and air. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, shared this in his traditional video message marking the 150th week of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

The Primate noted that on Christmas Day, December 25, Russia launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine.
“Therefore,” said the spiritual leader, “part of our Christmas services were held in the crypts of the Patriarchal Cathedral, in essence, in a bomb shelter. The Lord God willed that we meet Jesus Christ, born in Ukraine, among children, women, and the elderly—He chose to be born in a shelter this year. Our Savior is born where Ukraine is suffering most today.”
“Ukraine is caroling, celebrating Christmas. Ukraine stands, Ukraine fights, and Ukraine prays”, the Head of the Church emphasized.
According to him, this Sunday was special in all our eparchies and exarchates, not only in Ukraine but around the world. In response to Pope Francis’ call, the doors of the Jubilee Year 2025 were opened in the cathedrals and procathedrals of the UGCC.

“To open the doors of hope… This is a special invitation to our long-suffering people to become pilgrims of hope this Christmas season and in the new year, which is knocking at our hearts,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.
“Our hope is in God. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who was born in the body of the Ukrainian people, is the source, essence, and purpose of our Christian hope,” the Primate concluded.
