At the end of his visit to Ukraine, the Secretary of State of the Holy See met with Redemptorist priests who had been held in Russian captivity.

Cardinal Parolin Meets with UGCC Priests Released from Captivity

On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, the visit of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, who arrived in Ukraine as a special envoy of the Holy Father for the final services of the pilgrimage in Berdychiv, concluded. Before leaving the country, he met in Lviv with two Greek Catholic priests who had recently been released from Russian captivity.

In the afternoon of the same day, Cardinal Parolin left Kyiv and, on his way to Poland, stopped in Lviv to meet with Redemptorist Fathers Bohdan Geleta and Ivan Levytsky, who were released from Russian captivity on June 28, 2024. During their fraternal conversation, the Holy Father’s envoy inquired about the conditions of their imprisonment, their current condition, and their health. Both priests expressed their gratitude for the prayers and tireless concern of the Holy Father and the Holy See for their plight.

Following this, on Wednesday, July 24, the Secretary of State of the Holy See returned to the Vatican. The program of his visit, which lasted from July 19 to 24, included a visit to the Patriarchal Cathedral of the UGCC in Kyiv, a meeting with His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Head of the UGCC, and a meeting with the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations.
