Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti: “Thank you to the UGCC for remaining a source of hope for its people”
On Monday, June 30, Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for Eastern Catholic Churches, attended the second assembly of the first session of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, currently taking place in Rome.

In his address to the bishops, Cardinal Gugerotti expressed deep gratitude for the UGCC’s unwavering service amid the ongoing war and numerous hardships:
“The main message is gratitude—for what you do, for who you are, for the courage you instill in people, in priests, their families, and in all the faithful. Thank you for always being with the people and for remaining their only source of hope.”
He also reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to supporting the Church in Ukraine:
“We are ready to make every effort to assist you in all your needs, with the limited means at our disposal.”
Cardinal Gugerotti emphasized the essential role Eastern Catholic Churches play in preserving the Christian heritage and voiced concern over the threats they face—from war and religious fundamentalism to the challenges of mass migration and life in the diaspora.
