Bishop-auxiliary has been elected for the Kyiv Archeparchy of the UGCC

On November 3, 2022, the Vatican announced that the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC had elected Father Andriy Khimyak as the bishop-auxiliary of the Kyiv Archeparchy of the UGCC, to whom the Holy Father Francis gave his consent, appointing him the Titular See of Cuicul, the Holy See Press Office reports.

Biographical note

Was born on April 13, 1981 in Lviv in a Christian family of Mykhailo and Hanna Khimyak.

From 1988–1998, he studied at Lviv Secondary School No. 44, named after T. G. Shevchenko, having obtained a complete general secondary education. Since 1995, he has belonged to the altar servers of the Archcathedral of St. George in Lviv, having the opportunity to deepen his faith and see an excellent example of priests.

From 1998–2005, he studied at the Lviv Theological Seminary of the Holy Spirit, earning a specialist degree in theology. From 2005–2008, he studied at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome at the Faculty of Oriental Ecclesiastical Sciences, obtaining the academic degree of Licentiate in Theology.

He received subdeacon ordination on March 20, 2005, from Bishop Vasyl Medvit, Exarch of Kyiv-Vyshgorod. He was ordained a deacon by His Beatitude Sviatoslav on May 9, 2012, and a priest on November 4, 2012.

In September 2009, he started working in the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops as an assistant to Bishop Bohdan Dzyurach, the Secretary of the Synod of Bishops. From September 2016 — as a deputy secretary of the Synod of Bishops. Since April 2021, he has been performing the duties of the Secretary of the Synod of Bishops.

From 2008 to 2013, he taught the course “Eastern Christian Spirituality” at the DistanceLearningMaster’s Degree Programin Ecumenical Studies (DLPES) at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Since 2014, he has been a teacher at the Kyiv ThreeSaintsTheological Seminary.
