Eparchy of Olsztyn-Gdańsk

The eparchy of Olsztyn-Gdańsk is an eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Poland. Together with the Przemyśl-Warsaw Archeparchy and the Wrocław-Koszały Eparchy, it is part of the Przemyśl-Warsaw Metropolitanate. The eparchy covers the northern part of the Republic of Poland, namely the Pomeranian, Warmian-Masurian, and Podlaskie Voivodeships in full and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian and Masovian Voivodeships in part. Thus, the total area of the Olsztyn-Gdansk eparchy is about 82,373 km2. The bishop’s residence is located in the city of Olsztyn (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland). As for the geographical location, the Olsztyn-Gdańsk eparchy borders the Przemyśl-Warsaw archeparchy to the south, the Wrocław-Koszały eparchy to the west, the Kaliningrad eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church to the north, the Grodno and Volkovy eparchy of the Belarusian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church to the east, in the northeast — with the Vilkaviški eparchy of the Latin Rite in Lithuania.

At present, the process of formation of church structures is taking place in the newly formed Olsztyn-Gdańsk eparchy.

The ruling bishop of the eparchy of Olsztyn-Gdańsk since January 23, 2021, is His Eminence Bishop Arkady Trokhanowski.

The cathedral of the eparchy of Olsztyn-Gdańsk is the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God in the city of Olsztyn (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland). In addition, the eparchy has a pro-cathedral of St. Bartholomew and the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God.

The Olsztyn-Gdańsk eparchy was formed by the approval of the Holy Father by Pope Francis of the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which took place on November 25, 2020, on the day of the liturgical commemoration of the holy martyr Josaphat, Archbishop of Polotsk. This formation of a new eparchy took place due to the allocation of territories from two church structures at that time: the Przemyśl-Warsaw Archeparchy and the Wrocław-Gdańsk eparchy. Today, the Olsztyn-Gdansk eparchy is in the process of formation.

On January 23, 2021, at the end of the Divine Liturgy, during which the ordination of His Eminence Bishop Arkady Trokhanovsky took place, the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church His Beatitude Sviatoslav ushered him to the throne of the newly formed Olsztyn-Gdańsk eparchy.

First of all, among the holiday places of the Olsztyn-Gdansk, it is worth mentioning the Sanctuary of St. Volodymyr, the Baptist of Rus-Ukraine in the city of Gdansk (Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland), which was established on December 13, 2015, by the Most Reverend Bishop Volodymyr Juszczak, then the eparchy of Wroclaw-Gdansk.
