His Beatitude Sviatoslav: “A Unified Ukraine is an Unbreakable Ukraine”
Today, on January 22, 2025, Ukrainians celebrate one of the most significant national holidays—Unity Day of Ukraine. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, congratulated Ukrainians on this holiday, emphasizing the importance of the unity and resilience of our nation.
“Today we, Ukrainians, celebrate a great national holiday—Unity Day of Ukraine. It was on this day, January 22, 1919, that the Act of Unification of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Ukrainian People’s Republic was proclaimed on St. Sophia Square in Kyiv. At that time, our people, who had been torn apart by various states and empires for centuries, declared to the whole world: Ukraine is a single, independent, united state!” His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized.
The Head of the UGCC noted that this historic event is a reminder of the power of unity and consolidation of the Ukrainian people. He also recalled the “human chain” of 1990, which connected the East and West of Ukraine, and compared it to the current unity of Ukrainians in the fight against Russian aggression.
“This unity makes us resilient. Resilience in the face of an enemy who is trying to destroy our statehood is our response to the enemy’s attempts to seize us. We stand together, and no trials will break the spirit of the Ukrainian people,” he said.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav especially emphasized the importance of unity in the context of the current struggle for freedom of Ukraine. He emphasized that the unity, resilience and indestructibility of the Ukrainian people is the key to victory.
“A united Ukraine is an unbreakable Ukraine. In this difficult struggle for our freedom, we proclaim to the whole world: our state remains alive! It stands, fights and prays. Just as the Act of Unification became a symbol of national revival back then, so today our unity leads us to victory,” he added.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav called on Ukrainians to pray that the Lord would give them the strength to be together and win, because “the strength of the people is in unity.”
