Auxiliary bishop elected for Kolomyia Eparchy of the UGCC

The Vatican reports, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, His Holiness Pope Francis blessed the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC to elect Father Petro Holiney as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Kolomyia of the UGCC. He was granted the titular seat of Abrita.

Biographical note

The nominee Bishop Petro Holiney was born on July 12, 1973, in Dobrotiv village, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine.

From 1991 to 1996, he studied at the Ivano-Frankivsk Theological and Catechetical Institute and obtained a degree in theology and a qualification as a religion teacher.

After his ordination as a deacon on April 9, 1992, he assisted priests in the reconstruction of Greek Catholic parishes in the Chernivtsi region, and from 1996 to 1998, he served as a deacon in the parish of Delyatyn.

After his ordination to the priesthood on November 29, 1998, he served as an associate priest at the Delyatyn parish. Later he was responsible for the pastoral care of youth in the Yaremche Deanery, 2000–2014, and dean of the Yaremche Deanery, 2014–2016.

From 2005 to 2007, he advanced his theological studies at the Pontifical Theological Institute in Warsaw (Poland), where he obtained a Master of Theology in 2010 and a Licentiate in Theology in 2015, and from 2016 he studied at the Pontifical Oriental Institute (Rome). In 2020, he received a Doctorate in Oriental Church Studies.

Since December 3, 2021, he has been the Chancellor of the Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantine Rite in Italy. Since August 1, 2022, he has served as the senior priest of the Ukrainian parish of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in Rome.
